Recruitment
and audition procedures for principal positions
1.1. Announcements of
vacancies for principal positions will be publicized at least 45 days before
the audition date through normal professional channels.
1.2. An audition
committee for the process of filling principal player vacancies will consist of
the music director, four tenured principals appointed by the music director to
include at least two from the same family as the applicant (string, woodwind,
brass, percussion/keyboard). If only one tenured principal from the same family
is available, the auditions and hiring may proceed with only one tenured
principal player from that family serving on the audition committee. In the
case of principal string positions one section player from the section for
which the vacancy exists may replace
a non-string principal at the discretion of the music director.
1.3. Candidates for
principal positions will submit, to the personnel manager, resumes including
three professional references. The music director or audition committee must
also request a recorded performance or audition.
1.4. Auditions to
screen candidates for principal positions will be conducted in the same manner
as auditions for section positions except that the committee who screened
applications will serve as audition committee.
1.5. Candidates
qualified by majority vote of the audition committee will be invited to play a
complete rehearsal/performance series for a subscription concert.
1.6. Acting in advisory
capacity to the audition committee the section will rate each candidate by a
uniform questionnaire approved by the audition committee.
1.7. The audition
committee will meet and record its impressions immediately following each
performance.
1.8. Any player may
submit observations regarding candidates to the audition committee.
1.9. If fewer than five
candidates are invited to perform with the orchestra, the process may be
shortened.
1.10. After all finalist
candidates have completed their audition performances with the orchestra, the
audition committee will select the player to be offered the position. The final
decision of the committee will be taken by majority vote in secret ballot.
1.11. Decisions will be
announced no later than one month following the final subscription performance
of this process.
1.12. If, for any
reason, the successful candidate does not accept the position, the audition
committee, by majority vote, may choose to offer the position to another of the
candidates auditioned or to open the position to new applicants under the
process outlined above.
1.13. The music director
may make a probationary appointment to a principal position. However, the
granting of tenure for this appointment is subject to the provisions of
paragraph 3.1.2.
